CBD isolate is 99% pure CBD. It can come in a powder form or in a flavorless oil. CBD oil made with CBD isolate will usually have the highest concentration of CBD per milliliter when compared to other types of CBD oil.
But why isolate CBD? We’re glad you asked.
CBD is one cannabinoid in the cannabis plant. THC is the other main cannabinoid people talk about, though there are actually around a hundred different cannabinoids.
THC is the molecule that gives cannabis its psychoactive effects. Hemp plants (one variety of the cannabis family) have very small amounts of THC.
In fact, the amount is so small that the Federal Government recently removed hemp from the list of controlled substances (via the 2018 Farm Bill). That means hemp is now legal to grow, and products derived from hemp legal to consume.
How do they make CBD isolate?
This specialized CBD product is made with a two-step process. The first step is to extract CBD oil from cannabis. Butane and CO2 are two common extraction methods and will give you a 50% to 80% CBD extract.
The second step is to use fractional distillation to further purify the CBD. What’s left is 99% pure CBD.
The purest of the pure
Even though most CBD oil products come from hemp and have very little THC, THC may still be there in small amounts.
People who are sensitive to THC prefer to buy CBD isolate since it guarantees the absence of THC.
CBD isolate is also flavorless, which makes it great for baking or adding to recipes. It won’t alter the flavor of your food, unlike some other types of CBD products.
Another perk of this type of CBD: it won’t make you fail a drug test. Tests only detect THC, and with no THC to detect, there’s no problem.
